Malaekahana, also known as Castles, is a small white sand beach situated just north of Laie. Its lack of street signage makes it a fantastic place to escape and enjoy a less crowded beginner surf spot as well as a large white sand beach. Turtles are often seen in the surf and the mild shore break makes this beach a great place for children to have fun in the waves. The tall trees provide nice shade close to the water and parking is always very abundant. All things considered this is a fantastic beach for the whole family.
Weather: Malekahana is situated on the windward side of Oahu, which makes it prone to cloudy days in the wintertime. However, Hawaii’s weather patterns are completely unpredictable and this beach is known to have beautiful sunny days year round. Summertime it is most often sunny with occasional scattered clouds.
Nearby Food/Restaraunts: Kahuku, which is located just a few minutes north, is home to a number of good places to eat. If AMAZING cheeseburgers are your thing then Kahuku Grill is the place for you. This small town is also famous for its shrimp shacks, and many people make it a lunchtime destination on their way to various beaches on the north shore. Laie is home to a Foodland grocery store and is located 5 min. south on the Kamehameha Hwy.
When Surfing: The current here tends to slowly flow down the beach from left to right (when looking at the water from the beach) so it is often a good idea to walk up the beach a short distance before paddling out to take some of the work out of your paddle. The waves here are very mild and do tend to break sporadically so you will have to keep your eye out for the right place to be. As always, be mindful of ocean conditions and do not put yourself into any situations that you may not be able to handle. That being said, this is a fantastic place to learn how to surf.
What To Rent: Hawaii Beach Time rents surfboards and boogie boards here regularly, it is also an ideal beach for just kicking back and relaxing, subsequently beach chairs, umbrella’s, and coolers are always popular rental items here.
Hawaii Beach Time is Oahu’s premiere beach equipment rental service. Feel free to contact us at anytime via email or phone with any questions you may have.
WHAT TO RENT: Boogieboards are very popular at this beach due to the shore break. Hawaii Beach Time also recommends a cooler to pack a lunch and ice cold drinks since the closest dining is a good distance away.
Hawaii Beach Time is Oahu’s premiere beach equipment rental service and the only company that offers delivery and pick up. Feel free to contact us at anytime via email or phone with any questions you may have.
