The Beach: Kailua Beach Park is home to uncommonly white sand (by Hawaii’s standards) and clear/green water. The sand is much finer here than on other parts of Oahu and the distant outer reef provides a natural breakwater, preventing large waves from reaching the beach. For these and many other reasons, Kailua Beach is a fantastic place to bring children. The snorkeling just off shore is great for all ages and the beautiful scenery provided by nearby mountains and islands make this one of Oahu’s most popular beaches.
The Kayaking: Kayak rentals are Hawaii Beach Time’s most common delivery to Kailua Beach Park. The water is rarely too rough for kayaking and the various islands make for fun “paddle-to” destinations. The paddle to flat island situated just off shore of the park can be done in as little as 10 minutes, while the more scenic Mokulua islands can be paddled to in roughly 45 minutes (if you would like to visit these islands be sure to read our review on Lanikai beach which is a shorter paddle.) The water stays fairly shallow and kayakers should be weary of reef heads just under the surface. Ocean Conditions vary and proper precautions should be taken to ensure that everyone stays safe. Life jackets are provided with all Hawaii Beach Time kayak rentals and should always be worn.
Outrigger Canoe Clubs: Kailua Beach Park is home to a number of Hawaii’s outrigger canoe clubs and they can often be seen practicing there. Outrigger Canoe’s are an ancient Polynesian canoe and these clubs are owed a great deal of gratitude for being in many ways responsible for their continued popularity.
The Flat Island( or Popoia Island): Flat island is just under half a mile from shore and can easily be paddled to on one of Hawaii Beach Time’s kayaks for a picnic or scenic adventure. The island is a bird sanctuary and visitors should be careful not to disturb the many birds that use this small island as their nesting ground.
The Mokulua Islands: These iconic islands are situated just around the point to the right of the beach(if you are on the beach looking at the water) and can be kayaked to in just under an hour. The water stays fairly shallow almost all of the way there and thus the water appears abnormally green when compared to other parts of the Oahu. The first island(which also happens to be the only one you can visit) is home to a sandy beach that faces back toward Oahu. The view looking back is spectacular and well worth the paddle. Ocean conditions year round can be dangerous and kayakers should take great precaution, especially in the wintertime.
The Crowds: This is a popular beach for tourists and locals alike. That being said, on a sunny day it can get a little crowded. The Weather: Kailua Beach Park is situated on Oahu’s windward side, which makes its weather patterns far less predictable than south shore beaches. Wintertime is often cloudy, so be sure to check the weather report before you head out.
What To Rent: The Hawaii Beach Time staff recommends trying one of our kayak rentals at Kailua Beach Park, other popular rental equipment includes snorkels, chairs, umbrella’s, coolers, and stand up paddle boards.
